Betta Spawning
I'm planning on spawning White, my blue, turquoise, and red betta. I haven't gotten the female yet, but i hope to find one with a white body. I want the future babies to be more light coloured..but i'm inexperienced with genetics and i'm not sure how it will turn out. If you have any suggestions, you can email me at sarahliu@telus.net White is currently working on a giant bubble nest. I put a foam cup over it and it seems easier for him to build the nest bigger ok, i may be going to get my new stuff today! Wish me luck! hope i find a nice female! --update-- I went to my LPS today and there was a small tank full of great looking bettas. The one that caught my eye was a white Opaque one. But the thing is, she had some torn fins and it was slightly discoloured, but I think there were soem crowntail traits in her =D There were some really nice colourful ones, but they didn't look as healthy and attractive as the plain White Opaque, so I got this White one! I named her "Snow" (a suggestion on the Aquamaniacs Message Board. See link section). I can see something white + sticking out behind her ventral fins, but i'm not sure if it's her Oviposter. --update-- I had to take the female bowl out of the male's tank. The male was showing off too much. Wasn't buildign his nest. The female only cared about food. =[ I'll have to condition (with frozen bloodworms)them for another week or 2. --update--
I've decided to keep conditioning my pair of bettas for another 2 weeks or so. They've seen too much of each other and I don't want them to get bored of each other. I also need to go get some Brine Shrimp because my male isn't willing to eat freeze-dried or frozen bloodworms. 8|
--update--
Big change of plans. Just yesterday, White (the male) jumped out of the temporary cup he was in while I was waiting for the water in his tank to become warmer (i didn't know that warm water from the tap was safe). He was probably out of the cup for about 30-45 minutes. When I saw him, I immediately scooped him back into his tank and after seeking some advice on Aquamaniacs Message Board, I added some stress coat. He now has a small hole in his tail fin. I'm going to let him heal before I start conditioning/spawning him with Snow (the female) again. I moved him into a heated 10 gallon tank now. I'm planning to put a tank divider in so they can't see each other, but I want Snow to get a taste of heated water, ya know?
--update--April 17, 2002
I put a undergravel filter in the tank as a tank divider. There were 2 gaps about 1 cm wide each because there was a thing at the top which sticks in to hold the hood. I took two bags, taped around them, and stuffed them into the 2 holes. On the left side, there was just a small hole about 1cmx1cm. I turned around for 1 second and found him in the female part of the tank where her bag was floating. He was busy flaring and showing off to her.. lol
I chased him back w/ my finger and covered the hole up. I can tell (and i'm sure you can) that he likes to go into small holes and cracks. He spends a lot of time looking for different things to play in. He's decided to have fun going behind the heater. Back + forth, back + forth, back + forth behind the heater. Jeez! When's he going to stop?! He also built a giant bubble nest. The thing is, he's still not willing to eat conditioning foods.
--update!--April 29, 2002
I've decided to spawn Snow with my other betta. He's a combtail and I think the results may turn out better since White doesn't seem to want to build a bubble nest. He's always playing around. *rolls eyes*
